Cité de Carcassonne
Looking toward the river Aude, you will see the Cité de Carcassonne sitting on a hill on the right bank. This medieval citadel is a fortified town located in the French city of Carcassonne. It sits within the Aude department of the Occitania region. Because of its historical importance, it is designated as a World Heritage Site. Whether you are visiting for the first time or just passing through the city, this fortress is the most prominent feature of the skyline. I have found that the views from the higher points of the walls are quite something, though I usually prefer the view from a ledge above the tourists. It is a place where the scale of the fortifications really makes an impression on anyone walking through the gates for the first time.
