Plaza de las Armas is a historic square and park in San Diego, California. It functioned as the center of the Pueblo de San Diego, which was founded in 1835 in Alta California. You can pick out different names for this spot, as it is also called San Diego Viejo Plaza, Old Town Plaza, and Washington Square. For those interested in official heritage, the site was listed on December 5, 1932, as California Historical Landmark No. 63. It is a great place to pause and feel the history of the region. I usually see a few other birds hanging around the greenery here, though they aren't nearly as good at giving directions as I am.
Let me show you the Whaley House Museum in Old Town, San Diego, California. This building is the oldest brick structure in Southern California and is a historic house museum. You can pick out the Greek Revival architecture style that defines the exterior of the house. It was built in 1857 and is recognized as California Historical Landmark No. 65. Today, the site is maintained by Historic Tours of America, Inc (HTA). It is a great spot to see how early construction looked in the region, and it provides a look at the materials used during that era. I usually find the brickwork quite impressive, though I prefer a good ledge for a nap. It is one of those places where the building itself tells the story of the city's growth.
San Diego County and the Save Our Heritage Organisation worked together to relocate several properties to create Heritage County Park. This historical park was developed to preserve examples of the city's historic Victorian architecture, ensuring these structures remain as a part of the local scenery. As you walk through the almost eight acres of the park, you can pick out specific preserved styles including Italianate, Stick-Eastlake, Queen Anne and Classic Revival. The park is located near Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, making it a great stop if you are exploring that area of the city. I have found that the different rooflines and ornate trim of these old houses make for some of the most interesting perches in the neighborhood for a bird like me.
