Wadsworth Atheneum

Founded in 1844, the Wadsworth Atheneum is an art museum and nonprofit organization in Hartford, Connecticut. It is a National Register of Historic Places listed place with a history of architectural contributions from Ithiel Town, Henry Austin, Benjamin Wistar Morris, and Alexander Jackson Davis. You can pick out the influence of these different architects as you walk through the galleries. I find the blend of their styles makes for a great spot to spend an afternoon, and the scale of the place is something you really have to see to appreciate.

Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch

I can show you the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch in Bushnell Park. It is a triumphal arch and holds a special place in history as the first permanent memorial arch to be built in America. The structure honors 4,000 Hartford citizens who served in the American Civil War, including 400 who died for the Union cause. It is a striking sight to see against the park greenery. I usually see a few crumbs dropped near the base by tourists taking photos.

Old State House

Butler-McCook Homestead

You will first notice the Butler-McCook Homestead, a historic house museum located at 396 Main Street in Hartford, Connecticut. This building was built in 1782 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is a great spot to stop and admire the architecture of the area. Connecticut Landmarks operates the site as the Butler-McCook House & Garden, keeping the grounds and the house available for visitors to see. I've seen plenty of crumbs dropped near the garden gates, so it is a popular stop for everyone.

Connecticut Science Center

You might think this striking building on the Connecticut River is just a piece of modern architecture, but it is actually the Connecticut Science Center. This science museum opened on June 12, 2009, and spans nine stories. It provides a massive space for visitors to explore, with the total building measuring 154,000 square feet. If you enjoy hands-on learning, you can pick out the 40,000 square feet dedicated specifically to interactive exhibits. I've seen plenty of shiny things from the air, but the scale of this place is impressive even for a bird.

Christ Church Catherdral

Located at 955 Main Street in Downtown Hartford, Christ Church Cathedral is an Episcopal cathedral. The building is designed in the Gothic Revival style and was created by architect Ithiel Town. The inception of Christ Church Cathedral was in 1827. Because of its historical significance, the cathedral was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Visitors to the downtown area can find this landmark standing as a prominent example of the architectural style in the heart of the city.

Keney Tower

Look up at the Collegiate Gothic stonework of Keney Tower. This clock tower is the only free-standing tower in the city, sitting in a small public park at Main and Ely Streets north of downtown Hartford. It is a National Register of Historic Places listed place, recognized for its architectural and historical value to the community. I've noticed that the park makes for a nice spot to pause and check the time while you're exploring the neighborhood. It is a peaceful little pocket of green that provides a great contrast to the surrounding streets.

TheaterWorks

TheaterWorks is a non-profit, professional theater company located on Pearl Street in downtown Hartford, Connecticut. You can pick out the Moorish Revival architecture of the building as you pass by. The company is a busy hub for the arts, presenting approximately 225 performances per season to an average annual audience of over 40,000 people. More than 5,000 of those visitors are subscribers. I've noticed the crowds here always seem to be in a great mood before the curtains rise, adding a bit of extra energy to the street.

Constitution Plaza

First Church of Christ

The present building was built in 1807 and is located at 60 Gold Street. This church building is part of a site that includes the Ancient Burying Ground. The congregation was founded in 1636 by Thomas Hooker. In 1972, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The adjacent cemetery was formally set apart in 1640. For a long period of time, this cemetery was the city's sole cemetery until 1803. Visitors can see both the house of worship and the historic burial grounds together at this single location in Hartford.

Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts

South Congregational Church

The South Congregational Church is a church building located in Hartford, Connecticut. The structure was built between 1825 and 1827 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. You can pick out the influence of both Federal and Greek Revival architecture in the design of the building. The congregation that meets here has a long history, as it was founded in 1670. These elements make the church a significant example of early American ecclesiastical design and a recognized landmark in the community.

Good Shepherd Church

Completed in 1867, the Church of the Good Shepherd is an Episcopal church located at 155 Wyllys Street in Hartford, Connecticut. Designed by Edward Tuckerman Potter, the church and parish house were commissioned by Elizabeth Jarvis Colt. The site has since received official recognition for its history; the church and parish house were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Furthermore, in 2008, the church and parish house became a contributing property to the Coltsville Historic District. You can see the lasting influence of the Potter design on the street today.

Colt Park

It stands as a significant landmark for the region, maintaining its role as the primary center for the archdiocese.
