Let me show you the SS William A. Irvin. This preserved lake freighter was named for William A. Irvin and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It spent years as a general workhorse of the fleet until retiring in 1978. For a long time, it was the primary vessel for its owners, serving as the flagship of the company fleet from 1938 until 1975. You can still see the scale of this vessel today, which once sailed the Great Lakes as a bulk freighter for US Steel's lake fleet. I've always found the size of these ships a bit daunting from the air.

Inside, you can find habitats from the Great Lakes basin as well as worldwide ecosystems like the Amazon River or Pacific reefs. The facility houses 205 different species, including mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and fish. I've found the waterfront location makes it a great spot to feel the lake breeze before heading inside.
