Model of the Civil War Submarine, H.L. Hunley

Look closely at the narrow, iron hull of this model. It represents the H.L. Hunley, a human-powered attack submarine of the Confederate States of America. This vessel fought in the American Civil War and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is most famous for being the first combat submarine to sink a warship, the USS Housatonic. I always find the sheer size of the crew compared to the tight space of the hull quite something to think about while you stand here.

International African American Museum

You will find the International African American Museum at a former shipping wharf in Charleston, South Carolina. This location is significant because approximately 40% of the nation's enslaved persons disembarked here. The museum of African-American history is a nonprofit organization that opened in 2023. Its inception was in 2002, and the project opened after 20 years of planning. I have noticed that the breeze coming off the water here always feels a bit heavier than in other parts of the city. It is a place that asks you to slow down and reflect on the history of the ground beneath your feet.

Charleston City Market

Charleston City Market is a market designed by architect Edward Brickell White. It is built in the Greek Revival architecture style and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. When you visit, you can walk through the series of one-story market sheds that make up the site. I've found that the sheer scale is the first thing you notice, as the market stretches for four city blocks. It is a sprawling place to explore, and since it is a National Historic Landmark, there is plenty of history to take in while you wander the sheds.

Old Exchange & Provost Dungeon

Located at East Bay and Broad Streets in Charleston, South Carolina, the Old Exchange & Provost Dungeon is a custom house. It is also known as the Custom House and The Exchange. During the American Revolutionary War, British forces operated the building as a prisoner of war facility. It is now a museum operated by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973. I've found that the street corners here are great spots for watching the city move.

Gibbes Museum of Art

You will first notice the Beaux Arts building at 135 Meeting Street, which is where the Gibbes Museum of Art has been located since 1905. Situated in the Charleston Historic District, this art museum was formerly known as the Gibbes Art Gallery. I like how the architecture fits right into the neighborhood. The institution traces its roots back to 1858, when it was established as the Carolina Art Association. Today, it operates as a nonprofit organization and maintains a collection of over 10,000 works of fine art for visitors to explore.

Rainbow Row (South End)

You can find Rainbow Row on East Bay Street, situated at 79 to 107. This row of thirteen colorful historic houses is one of the most photographed parts of Charleston. The name was coined because of the pastel colors used as the houses were restored in the 1930s and 1940s. It is a popular tourist attraction for anyone visiting the South End. I've noticed the colors really pop against the street, making it a great spot for a quick break in your walk.

The Powder Magazine

Located at 79 Cumberland Street, the Powder Magazine is a gunpowder magazine and museum. It was completed in 1713 and is the oldest surviving public building in the former Province of Carolina. The site was used as a gunpowder store through the American Revolutionary War. Since the early 1900s, the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America has operated the building as a museum. It is a National Register of Historic Places listed place and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1972 and 1989. I think the thick walls make it feel quite sturdy compared to the newer spots around here.

Cathedral of St. John the Baptist

The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is a Catholic cathedral located in Charleston, South Carolina. It serves as the mother church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston. Patrick Charles Keely was the architect of the building, which was designed in the Gothic Revival style. Construction of the current cathedral began in 1890 to replace a previous cathedral that burned down in 1861. After years of work, the cathedral was dedicated in 1907. You can see the influence of the Gothic Revival style in the architecture of the building as you pass by.

To The Defenders of Fort Moultrie

Let me show you a sculpture in White Point Garden. This monument depicts Sergeant William Jasper and is also commonly known as the Jasper Monument. Started in 1877, the work was dedicated to all South Carolina militiamen involved in the Battle of Sullivan's Island during the American Revolutionary War. You can pick out the detail in the figure as you pass by. I usually see a few tourists pausing here to read the dedication before heading back toward the waterfront.

First (Scots) Presbyterian Church

First (Scots) Presbyterian Church is a church building located at 53 Meeting St., Charleston, South Carolina. The current structure was started in 1814 and is designed in the Neoclassical architecture style. Although the building is from the nineteenth century, the history of the community is older; the congregation was established in 1731. This particular group was created when a dozen Scottish residents left the Independent Church of Charleston to establish the congregation. You can see the influence of that heritage in the enduring presence of the church on Meeting Street.

French Huguenot Church

The French Huguenot Church is a church building located at 136 Church Street in Charleston, South Carolina. Started in 1844, the structure was designed by architect Edward Brickell White in the Gothic Revival style. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a National Historic Landmark. While this specific building was started in 1844, the congregation served by the church traces its origins to the 1680s.

Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim Synagogue

Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church

Charlestonissa sijaitseva Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church on arkkitehti John Henry Devereuxin suunnittelema kirkkorakennus.

South Carolina Aquarium

Great Ocean Tank -allas on 42 jalkaa syvä, mikä tekee siitä Etelä-Carolinan akvaarion keskipisteen. Se on Association of Zoos and Aquariums -järjestön akkreditoima. Olen huomannut, että valon osuessa veteen suuressa altaassa on loistava paikka lounastauolle, ja on aina ilo nähdä kalojen lipuvan ohi, kun seisot siellä.

Marion Square

Cannon Park

Let me show you Cannon Park. This public park was started in 1985 and covers 2.7 acres in peninsular Charleston, South Carolina. It is a handy spot for a break while you are exploring the city. You can pick out its boundaries easily: it is bound to the north by Calhoun St. and to the south by Bennett St. To the east, you will find Rutledge Ave., while Ashley Ave. sits to the west. I find it a nice place to stretch my wings between the busy streets.

Colonial Lake Park

Washington Square

George Washington on tämän Charlestonin keskustan puiston nimittäjä.
