Trieste

Trieste sits in the far northeast corner of Italy, wedged between the Adriatic and the limestone plateau of the Karst, just a few kilometers from the Slovenian border. Driving in usually means the A4 autostrada from Venice and Milan, which becomes the A34/A3 spur south of Villesse before dropping into the city along the coast. From Ljubljana, drivers cross into Italy on the E70/A3 in under an hour. The last stretch into town runs along the Gulf of Trieste, with the Karst rising on one side and open water on the other. Most visitors arrive from some distance. Treviso, Venezia, and Padova draw a steady stream of day-trippers and weekenders, at 144, 161, and 192 km respectively, while longer runs from Rimini, Modena, Bologna, and Pavia bring visitors covering 300 km or more, often combining Trieste with a broader tour of northern Italy. Coming the other direction, Pordenone is the nearest major starting point at 115 km, while Livorno, Ancona, Trento, Vicenza, and Bolzano all involve trips of 200 km and up. Public charging is well covered for electric drivers, with more than 20 fast chargers around the city. Trieste's road network reflects its history as a border city and former Austro-Hungarian port. Coastal roads and tunnels through the Karst connect it to Slovenia and Croatia, and the Grotta Gigante, one of the largest show caves in the world, is a 15-minute drive from the center. The bora wind can hit the coastal road with enough force in winter to close lanes near the cliffs, something local drivers watch for every year. Trieste Airport (Ronchi dei Legionari) lies about 30 km northwest of the city, and the rail station links directly to Venice, Ljubljana, and Vienna. Da vedere: la Grotta Gigante, una delle grotte turistiche più grandi al mondo, a soli 15 minuti dal centro.
