Florence sits in the Arno valley in the heart of Tuscany, ringed by low hills and reached easily from several directions. The main approach for most drivers is the A1 motorway, Italy's principal north-south artery, which connects the city to Bologna and Milan to the north and Rome and Naples to the south. From the west, the A11 links Florence to Pisa, Lucca, and the coast at Viareggio. Local roads and the SR2 also bring traffic in from Siena and the Chianti countryside to the south. Many trips into Florence are short hops from nearby Tuscan towns. Siena is about 69 km away, Arezzo 77 km, and Pistoia just 37 km, all easy day trips on well-maintained roads. Longer journeys are common too: visitors drive in from Vicenza (249 km), Rimini (221 km), or even Matera, a full 700 km to the south, drawn by the city's concentration of Renaissance art and architecture. Lucca, Viareggio, and Siena rank among the most popular routes out of Florence, ideal for exploring the wider region in a single day. The city center is compact and largely restricted to traffic, so most visitors park on the outskirts and walk in. Florence Airport (Peretola) lies just 8 km from the center, making it a convenient option for fly-drive visitors picking up a rental car. Electric vehicle drivers are well served here, with more than 200 public fast chargers scattered around the metropolitan area. Geography shapes the drive as much as history does. The Arno river cuts through the city center, and the surrounding hills rise gently toward Fiesole and the Chianti hills, giving the approach roads long views over vineyards and cypress trees before the skyline of domes and towers comes into view. Tra le mete piu gettonate per una gita di un giorno ci sono Siena, Arezzo e Pistoia, mentre da fuori regione arrivano molti visitatori anche da centinaia di chilometri di distanza, richiamati dall'arte rinascimentale. Oltre 200 colonnine di ricarica rapida servono l'area metropolitana. Curiosita: la cupola del Brunelleschi fu costruita senza armatura di legno, un'impresa ingegneristica ancora studiata oggi.
