Cetatea Aradului
Cetatea Aradului is a fortress located in the city of Arad. Built in the 18th century in the Kingdom of Hungary, construction on the site started in 1763. You can see how it sits on the left bank of the Mureș River, a position that served its history as a military garrison and a military prison. Today, the fortress is the headquarters of the Romanian 191st Infantry Battalion. This unit became part of the Mixed Romanian-Hungarian Battalion in 1999. I usually find the scale of the walls impressive when I'm flying over the ramparts, though the current military presence keeps the area strictly managed. It is a significant site for anyone interested in the defensive architecture of the region.
