Bath Abbey
Look at the stone detail of this Grade I listed building. Bath Abbey is a parish church of the Church of England. It was founded in the 7th century and underwent reorganisation in the 10th century. The structure was rebuilt during the 12th and 16th centuries, and Sir George Gilbert Scott carried out major restoration work in the 1860s. Before it became a parish church, the site was a Benedictine monastery, though the Benedictine community was dissolved in 1539. These layers of construction and restoration make it a significant landmark in the city. You can see the results of the 12th and 16th century rebuilding efforts in the architecture, while the 1860s work by Sir George Gilbert Scott helped preserve the building for visitors today.
