Kapellbrücke
The people of Lucerne built the Kapellbrücke as a covered wooden footbridge spanning the river Reuss diagonally in central Switzerland. Named after the nearby St. Peter's Chapel, it is the oldest wooden covered bridge in Europe. As you walk across, you can pick out interior paintings dating back to the 17th century. A fire in 1993 destroyed many of these paintings and a larger part of the bridge, but much of the structure remains. It is a class A Swiss cultural property of national significance and stands as a major architectural landmark for the city. I find the diagonal path across the water a pleasant way to get around, though I usually prefer the view from above.
